All about BMP files
The file extension bmp signifies an image file that has been saved in the device independent bitmap format. The format is rather historic; it has been in use since 1990. However due to its simplicity and the absence of any patent protection, bmp is still widespread and remains supported by very many graphics programs.
Bmp files consist of a header that specifies the width, height, color depths, resolution and other image information, and the pixel array that is a pixel by pixel representation of the image. Images can be monochrome or color in various color depths. Although there is a data compression option, bmp files mostly remain uncompressed and thus tend to be fairly large.
Another file extension for bitmap files is dib (device independent bitmap) – dib and bmp files are almost identical, although they differ in the way information is specified in the file header.
