All about MXF files
MXF stands for Material eXchange Format and is an open container format for professional video and audio production. The MXF format was developed to simplify the exchange of audio and video data between different systems, regardless of the manufacturer. MXF was developed between 1998 and 2004 as a joint project by the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and the Pro-MPEG Forum. In 2004, it was finally standardised as SMPTE 377M.
How does MXF work?
MXF is a container format, similar to .MP4 or .MKV. This means that MXF packages audio, video and metadata in a single file. An MXF file can contain MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, ProRes or even completely uncompressed video. The big advantage over older formats is that MXF can carry extensive metadata in addition to the actual audio and video material. This includes timecodes, camera settings, audio tracks in different languages and other technical information for editing.
Where is MXF used?
MXF is THE standard in the professional broadcast world. Almost all TV stations work with MXF internally. This format is also frequently used for the exchange of video production to the broadcaster. Typical sources for MXF files are professional camera systems from Sony (XDCAM), Panasonic (P2), Canon (Cinema EOS) and Arri. MXF also forms the technical basis for the delivery of film material in digital cinema.
