SVG is the format of choice for logos, icons and graphics – scalable, crystal-clear at any size and with minimal storage requirements. However, not every application can handle vector graphics. For social media, email attachments or software without SVG support, a raster format is required: PNG.

Why convert SVG to PNG?

SVG files consist of mathematical paths and shapes, not pixels. They are therefore scalable without any loss of quality, but unfortunately also incompatible with many platforms. Most social networks do not accept SVG uploads, email programmes do not display them, and many image editing programmes struggle with them too.
PNG, on the other hand, works everywhere. It is a lossless raster format supported by every browser, app and operating system – and it retains transparency. This makes it the ideal choice when an SVG graphic is to be used outside the browser.

What happens during conversion?

During conversion, the vector graphic is rasterised, i.e. converted into a pixel image. The resolution chosen is crucial: too small a size leads to blurry results, too large a size to unnecessarily large files. Transparent areas are, of course, preserved.
