All about DivX files
MPEG-4-based video codec
DivX is a video codec based on MPEG-4 that enjoyed enormous success, particularly in the 2000s. DivX made it possible to compress an entire DVD film (4-8 GB) onto a single CD (700 MB) with acceptable quality. Since DVD burners were virtually unaffordable for private individuals at that time, CD burning was the only way to exchange large amounts of data.
Today, the DivX format has been largely replaced by .MP4 with H.264 and other codecs. For maximum compatibility with similar file sizes, it is advisable to convert .divx to .mp4.
