All about DOCX files
The docx file extension is used by Microsoft Word Documents that have been saved in the Open XML Format, which Microsoft has developed for their Office suite. DOCX is the default way Microsoft Word saves documents for version 2007 and up of the text processing software. Earlier Word versions use doc as their default file extension.
A docx file is actually a zip-compressed archive of several separate files that can contain text, images, objects, formatting and style directives. Being compressed, a docx file will be considerably smaller than a doc file of the same document.
Docx files can be opened and handled with Word 2007 and younger. Earlier Word versions acquire the functionality to open, edit and save docx files with the help of a free Microsoft Office compatibility pack. OpenOffice and wps Office (the former Kingsoft Office) are free office software programs that can can also open and create docx files.
