WPS files are created using Microsoft Works, a previously cheaper alternative to Microsoft Office. WPS files can be opened with newer Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word versions without problems. However, to open WPS files with free programs such as LibreOffice or OpenOffice, the files must be converted.
