All about M2TS files
M2TS is the video file format used by Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray discs—often created for personal use—are frequently copied to a computer. This can sometimes result in M2TS files being found on the computer without any further organization. M2TS files contain video data encoded in formats such as H.264, VC-1, and MPEG-2, typically in high resolution.
Historical Background on M2TS Files
The Blu-ray Disc Association specified the BDAV (Blu-ray Disc Audio Visual) format for video recordings on Blu-ray media. [1] The first Blu-rays were released in MID-2006, and by February 2008, Blu-ray had emerged as the winner of the format war against HD-DVD when Toshiba discontinued further development of the latter. [2] In the years that followed, Blu-ray became the standard medium for HD content, both for commercial providers and for private movie recordings.
Technical Structure
Like MTS, M2TS is based on the MPEG-2 transport stream. The main difference lies in their origin: MTS files are created directly on AVCHD camcorders and use the 8.3 filename format to ensure compatibility with the FAT file system. M2TS files, on the other hand, come from Blu-ray discs, which allow for longer filenames. In practice, this often means: MTS comes from the camera, M2TS from the Blu-ray.
