All about PNG files

One of the more popular graphical formats for web design, Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a non-patent licensed image file format which supports lossless data compression. It was first released in 1996, and was developed as an enhanced version of the standard Graphics Interchange Format (GIF).
It is especially good for storing small graphic files such as text, icons or other non-photographic images. It has some advantages over other formats like jpg or gif, such as allowing transparency and a higher number of colours (than gif), but it does not support animation!
PNG format files can be viewed in most web browsers and can be created and edited in most photo or picture editing software. Recent versions of the Macintosh operating system use PNG for screenshots.
