All about VSD files
VSD stands for Visio Drawing and is the older version of the Microsoft Visio file format. .VSD files typically contain diagrams, technical drawings and similar computer-generated graphics. Visio was developed in 1992 by Shapeware Corporation, acquired by Microsoft in 2000, and eventually integrated into the Office suite. The VSD format was the standard file format from version 1.0 up to Visio 2010 (with Office 2010) until it was replaced by VSDX (similar to DOCX, XLSX).
Technical details of the VSD format
VSD files are container files which, like .DOC, are based on the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format (OLE container). All the contents of the diagram are stored in this container: shapes, connection lines and text boxes (all vector-based). Embedded images, layouts and other metadata are also included; even macros can be integrated.
What is VSD used for?
Visio is widely used in businesses and is employed for a wide variety of visualisation tasks. Typical use cases include flowcharts and process diagrams, organisation charts, network diagrams (e.g. for IT documentation), UML diagrams for software development, floor plans or room layouts, and database models. Visio’s strength lies in its large selection of ready-made templates.
