Created by Adobe software including Acrobat, Capture, Design or other open-source printing shareware, Portable Document Format (PDF) files simplify portability. Designed to include all the captured printed elements of their source, PDF-files can be viewed using Acrobat Reader software to display multiple PAGES and zoom in or out.
Because PDF format files contain all the elements of a printed document as an electronic image, including embedded fonts, they are particularly useful in applications such as:
- Scanned archives.
- Documentation, especially manuals.
- Graphic design and development such as flyers, product brochures and magazine articles.
- Support environments that work with shared documents and various users on different PCs or workstations.
- The electronic distribution of any materials where it is essential to preserve the printed appearance.
PDF viewer software is free and downloadable from Adobe, as well as other leading providers.
Notably, PDF is also an abbreviation for a Printer Definition File in host printing services and Novell Netware, though less frequently used.
