JXL files cannot yet be used easily on the web in 2026: only Safari displays them natively; whilst Chrome and Firefox have the decoder built in, it is still hidden behind a feature flag. So if you have received or exported a photo in JXL format and want to embed it on a website, share it via a messaging app or upload it to social media, you need a format that works everywhere.
WebP is the most modern option for this, with the widest support. Unlike JPG, WEBP also supports transparency and animations, and the files are noticeably smaller for comparable quality. Compared to PNG, WebP significantly reduces file size, albeit with slight compression losses that are barely noticeable in practice. WebP is therefore the best compromise between file size, quality and compatibility when the intended use is on the web.
