All about DOC files
Historically, DOC was a proprietary document file format used by Microsoft Word, the word processor program included with Microsoft Office. Indeed, it was the default file format used by Microsoft Word 97-2003. A DOC file can contain formatted text, charts, tables, images and other common word processor elements.
However, Microsoft opened the DOC specification in 2006 and it was subsequently reverse engineered, so that it could be supported by other word processing programs, such as OpenOffice Writer. Microsoft Word 2007 and later versions use the Microsoft Word XML Format Document, with a docx, rather than DOC, file extension, as the default file format.
The DOCX file format is based on Extensible Markup Language, or XML for short, so the format is not backwards compatible with earlier versions of Microsoft Word.
