All about RAW files
RAW is a file format that is also considered a digital negative. At first, raw only specifies a certain raw data format in which images or videos are either not compressed at all, loss-free or lossy, in order to allow as flexible a postprocessing as possible. Different camera manufacturers rely on RAW format on different containers and file extensions. These include, for example, nef, TIFF or cr2.
RAW or jpg – these are the differences and purposes
RAW files are designed to eliminate the quality differences between analog film and digital printing in terms of contrast range, for example, by allowing photographers to compensate for the weaknesses of the digital sensor. Values such as white balance or the iso value can be subsequently adjusted in RAW formats. Storing color depths in 10, 12, 14 or even 16 bits produces finer gradations. This is especially noticeable in direct comparison with a compressed 8-bit JPEG and allows a finer adjustment of the image. However, photographing (or filming) in RAW format is not always useful. It very quickly very large amounts of data, which requires a corresponding amount of space. The speed of the memory cards themselves and the computing power of the camera are often brought to their performance limits by recording in RAW. In addition, RAW formats are not compatible with each other and can only be opened by dedicated software or professional image editing programs.
