All about XLS files
XLS is a file format used for spreadsheets created in Microsoft Excel and related applications. It has been an industry standard format for many years, and can be created using many different spreadsheet software products. A typical file will consist of text and numbers created within a spreadsheet, but can also store and display relevant information about charts and macros. Most spreadsheets will have user-inputted data stored in rows and columns, but can also have data entries created automatically within the software using macros, calculations and other tools.
In 2007, XLS was superseded as the primary Excel format by Open Office XML (.xlsx extension), but remains commonly used worldwide by millions of people throughout business, industry and academica, as well as many individual users.
