Apple Numbers spreadsheet format, ZIP-based

.numbers files are spreadsheets created using Apple’s Numbers app, the spreadsheet program from the iWork suite. A .numbers file therefore contains everything you’d expect to find in a spreadsheet: tables with rows and columns, formulas, charts, images, text, and all the formatting that goes with it. Unlike Excel, however, Numbers—typical of Apple apps—places greater emphasis on design and on the fact that a file can contain multiple standalone tables side by side on a sort of canvas, rather than just a rigid grid of “tabs.”

Anyone who receives a .numbers file on Windows or Linux knows the problem: no application will open it. This is because Numbers is strictly an Apple product. The app is available for macOS, iPadOS, and iOS, as well as in a web version on iCloud.com, but not as a download for Windows.

NUMBERS as part of iWork

Apple introduced Numbers in 2007 as part of the iWork suite, along with PAGES (word processing) and Keynote (presentations). The app comes pre-installed for free on current Macs, iPads, and iPhones. This means the .numbers format will continue to produce files in the coming years that non-Apple users will have to deal with.

Converting NUMBERS

Apple has provided a built-in feature for converting to Excel. Under "File > Export," Numbers can export spreadsheets to Excel, CSV, TSV, and PDF.
