All about FODS files
LibreOffice spreadsheets as a single, uncompressed XML file
FODS is the flat XML variant of the OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format. While a standard ODS file is a ZIP archive that bundles multiple XML files, styles, and embedded objects, a FODS file consists of a single, uncompressed XML file. The complete content—spreadsheet data, formatting, formulas, and metadata—is contained in a single file in XML format.
The format originates from the OASIS OpenDocument standard and is primarily supported by LibreOffice. Microsoft Excel cannot open FODS files.
In practice, most FODS files are created accidentally when users in LibreOffice unintentionally or unknowingly select the Flat XML format instead of the regular ODS format when saving. Anyone who has received a FODS file and wants to work with it can easily convert it to ODS, XLSX, or other spreadsheet formats; PDF conversion is also possible.
